Where coders get their pleasure from, + new game

Posted by Toast - October 30th, 2008

I'm happy and pretty proud of myself atm because I just finished coding a fully functioning traditional Mastermind game in less than 17 lines auto-formatted in flash. I recall reading a conversation on the flash forum where artists said they cannot understand how people enjoy coding: just working with numbers where there is no creativity. This is false as there is a lot of space for creativity in coding, and it is always extremely satisfying to overcome difficult problems.

I might polish up what I got so far for Mastermind and get someone who is decent with graphics to do some menus and shit, then submit it along with my other puzzle that some of you may have heard of: Lights out. If this all works out as I plan it should be exciting because I'll have enough money to buy all the parts for the gaming rig im planning to build.

:)

Coding is more fun than animating at times (really animating can be grim) in coding you will always know that there is a solution that you can find but when animating you might have to cut the part of the animation because it is too hard for you.

I say coders have their fun and animators have their fun.

Creative coding is fun and also often solves strange problems.

I agree. I'm not a coding expert but recently I've been trying to make a couple of moderately big games, and it is always an amazing feeling to code something and have it really work.

I'm a beginner coder. So I can't write any code except simple ones.

Any pointers?

go play "increase its size" by Joelasticool and you will know what true coders can accomplish!

Magical-Mark, I disagree.

In coding there are things you cannot overcome because you have no idea how to code them.

However, with art, you can always do something if you give it the right amount of time and patience.

Even if it takes hours for one frame, with art it's always possible.

i wish i was a shirtturtle :(

The nerdier side of Flash.

Coding flash can be fun.. depending on how experienced you are at it, and the mood you're in?

:3

my game isnt even started and it already has 50 lines of coding D:

hehe well it depends what kind of game it is. Most of my games have hundreds, if not thousands of lines. But coding puzzles is very different than say, a platformer. It's more math and less action, so it's much easier to compress it to a smaller number of lines. I started coding puzzles a while ago and i can tell you im really enjoying it

*You spin me right round, baby
right round like a record, baby
Right round round round
You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round round round

Cock joke isn't an insult. It is spam though.

Psycho, your post made no sense. If you don't know how to code something, you go look it up. There is almost always going to be a solution for a problem.

With art it takes months, sometimes years, to even get to the point where you can express yourself fully in any medium. The way I see it, you can't just sit down a draw something extremely detailed at any point in time you want to. Artists have to gain technical experience just like coders do.

I would like to see you sit someone down with no animation experience and ask them to draw a backdrop with the detail of Adam Philips work. It might take months, but hey, it'll get done :/

Yeah, I was always afraid that the coding aspects to games would be tedious.

But it's actually very, very fun! Problem solving at it's finest, especially when you can bring your own graphics to life.

For me coding is great, until i get to like 300-400 lines where it starts getting really complicated. it's still fun but if you accidentally take out a curly bracket, your world goes to hell for the next 5 minutes.
But apart from that i love coding

Flash tells you on what line you have errors due to brackets so I don't think it's a problem. Number of lines is irrelevant as long as what you're coding interests you.
